Fine Kwam Ceremonial bowl, Wosera Peple, Middle Sepik, Papua New Guinea. Sculpted fired clay and natural pigment. Kwam are important cult objects and ceremonial bowls. They are decorated with one or more stylized representations of nggwal or ancestral spirits. At a specific moment in male initiation ceremonies, the kwam is used to drink a special (white soup) made of sago, coconut and yam. The kwam is also used in yam-harvest ceremonies, as well as in ceremonies related to the cult of the ancestors. Approx L19 x29cm. PROVENANCE Ex Eric Coote Collection, New South Wales.
